There’s a bank in Portugal that started a solidarity campaign that consists in opening several bank accounts to put money, in order to help different social institutions.
For example, last year Montepio, the bank, comitted to contribute with a bank account in which every Portuguese citizen could donate 1 euro to the Portuguese Fireman Association. According to the President of this Association,”this is an important donation” as he believes that “this kind of iniciatives change people’s feelings and attitudes towards some institutions that give so much to help others”:
“Fireman give their lives to protect others citizens so it is important to give them recognition and gratitude”, he said in an interview to Público newspaper.
However, Montepio is not just helping the Portuguese Fireman, the campaign is filled with different iniciatives, like the project “Street Football”.
This time, Cais Association is the one that benefits from this idea. Since this association tries everyday to improve people’s lives by finding them a place to stay in order to avoid homelessness in Lisbon, the project consists in having Montepio has a sponsor for several infrastructures.
“Through this we were able to build a new football pitch in the streets of Lisbon, where the kids usually play without any safe conditions. In the future, we want to have more open spaces like this and promote small football contests between neighborhoods”, said Gustavo Santos, from Cais Association.
After getting involved with social institutions, Montepio, could not ignore the environment issue. Therefore, the bank also created the project “Biovilla”, which is dedicated to education in sustainability. Through this project Montepio invested money in the contruction of the “Biovilla” (a small hotel in the middle of the Arrábida mountains, in Portugal) where being Earth friendly is a priority.
